Leading by example - Workgroup Connections' own success on AWS (A Case Study):
How migrating to AWS allowed WGC to trade Capital Expenses (CapEx) for Operational Expenses (OpEx) while increasing performance, security and resiliency.
21st century problem:
Our own success story is a testament for all that is Amazon Web Services (AWS) resultant from migrating our traditional on-Prem, Co-Located servers and software solutions to AWS. Traditionally, we hosted our own data center at Workgroup Connections. Additionally, were using a local provider to Co-Locate one of our VMware ESXi servers that hosted our SaaS applications. As a lot of companies are faced with, we were in the same situation with increased hosting costs, but more importantly aging hardware. Do we use capital expenses and invest in new “right size” servers or do we migrate to the cloud and trade for operational expenses?
The direction was clear:
Trading CapEx for OpEx and migrating our solutions to AWS would not only decrease costs, but would also significantly increase performance, resiliency and the ability to scale on demand. Our plan was to create a hybrid data center model and migrate our virtual machines from one VMware ESXi onPrem host in addition to our co-located ESXi host. We would still keep 2 of our newer ESXi hosts onPrem. The move would constitute 11 virtual machines that would need to migrated to EC2 instances (most are tightly coupled with our infrastructure). We would use AWS’ SMS (Server Migration Service) appliance to do the heavy lift and shift while maintaining no down time.
Within a few short weeks we were able to configure our AWS VPC (Virtual Private Cloud), deploy the SMS appliance and connector and migrate our virtual machine instances to AWS and decommission 2 large-aging servers. Since a hybrid cloud strategy was necessary for success, we configured a VPN between our local data center Firewall and our AWS VPC. The AWS VPN service is naturally redundant, secure and straightforward to integrate. In the 2 years since migration (at time of writing), we have had zero downtime and zero issues. LDAP authentication, replication, backup and application integration between onPrem and our VPC is extremely robust and transparent to our users. The cost saving of decommissioning our CoLo server alone paid for itself. We no longer have to worry about who has access to our hardware, monitoring RAID arrays and hard drive failure, power outages and host software upgrades. In addition, we can scale our EC2 instances at will.
