JungoLogic, Inc. - A Start-Up in the Cloud (A Case Study):
How Workgroup Connections helped JungoLogic build and deploy a modern web application and complete infrastructure in the cloud on AWS.
In 2013, a revolutionary concept was realized to develop a SaaS application in order to help companies build a better salesforce through psycometric analysis. The idea was to build a test and allow the creation of personality profiles that companies could use to match candidates with similar traits as their high performers. Analysis and AI would be used to match canditates that have the best chance of success for a company's culture, sales regiment and other factors that have been proven to be posessed by sucessful sales individuals.
Formulating the architecture:
Outside of the need to host business continuity applications and the corporate website, a moden Java application infrastructure would also be a requisite. The hosted Java applications would need to be secure, resillient, scalable and tightly integrated with a CI/CD model. A segmented VPC would be architected to isolate public facing assets from private resources in a 3 tier architecture and EC2 instances would be used as the workhorse for the SaaS model. MySQL RDS would be used for the main datastore and and Elastic Load Balancer would front the web servers in addition to serving as the endpoint for SSL/TLS termination in addition to providing the ability to use auto scaling. The EC2 instances would be spread across multiple Availability Zones (AZ) to provide resiliency and elinate single points of failure.. DynamoDB would be used to store user session affinity to provide a seamless experience.
In addition to the host of business continuty infrastructure and applciations, the SaaS application infrastructure was deployed. The MySQL RDS instance has been extremely robust and a cross AZ replica has been in place for the unlikely event of failure. The appliction can scale EC2 instances up or down depending on need and BlazeMeter load tests have shown the performance capabilities and resiliency of the architecture.. Auto scaling has been an extremely cost effective way of using only the amount of resources needed. The ELB has been nothing short of amazing with the added benefit of making the process of updating SSL/TLS certificates a cinch.
"Workgroup Connections and their technology team has been instrumental in the success of JungoLogic. From their development team to their AWS architects, they pack an extremely hard punch with a relatively small group. Agile methodologies helped us move from concept to production in an extremely short time. - Kevin Painter, Co-Founder JungoLogic, Inc."
...Innovation never ends. A retrospective update:
Even in the short time the above architecture has been in place, evolution has changed standards rapidly. Microservices and containerization have changed the landscape once again. No longer is is necessary to maintain EC2 instances for Apache Web Servers and Tomcat Instances for Java application servers. Containerization and offloading some of the built in microservices into AWS technologies such as ECS, SMS and Lambda make administration and maintenance easier and scalability more robust with larger ROI. The new strategy will be to parse the (somewhat monolith) Java applications and migrate into microservices using the aforementioned technologies. Check back for that case study!
